Renowned social activist, Rickford Burke, has vehemently responded to the Government of Guyana’s recent declaration that he is a fugitive, asserting that it is yet another instance of the government’s ongoing abuse of power. In a passionate statement, Rickford Burke called attention to the government’s pattern of trumped-up charges and manipulation of the justice system to silence dissenting voices.

Addressing a growing audience, Rickford Burke expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s fundamentally anti-black stance. He pointed out historical incidents, notably during former President Jagdeo’’s tenure from 1999 to 2010, where numerous black individuals were allegedly killed by state-sanctioned death squads. “These claims were substantiated by investigations conducted by the United Nations, which held key government officials responsible”, he said. Rickford Burke emphasized the need for both local and diaspora communities to acknowledge this reality.

Rickford Burke expressed condemnation at what he perceives as the government’s insincere attempts to engage with black communities for political gain. He accused the government of buying votes and paying individuals to feign support, asserting that they have no genuine concern for black people. He likened the government to apartheid regimes, drawing a parallel to the racist policies implemented in South Africa during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

Furthermore, Rickford Burke questioned the moral compass of certain individuals within the government who belong to the black community. He called out specific figures, such as Prime Minister Mark Phillips, and Minister’s Onidge Waldron, Joe Hamilton, and Hugh Todd, expressing disbelief that they could align themselves with leaders who allegedly plotted against their own people. Rickford Burke described the Guyana PPP government as being fundamentally anti-black and anti-immigrant, calling for introspection on their part.

The activist went on to accuse the government of stockpiling arms, granting gun dealer licenses to supporters, and importing weapons, alluding to the preparation for a potential war against black people. Despite the government’s attempts to intimidate and suppress dissent, Rickford Burke declared an unwavering commitment to free speech and the defense of black communities.  In response to the government’s efforts to tarnish his reputation, Rickford Burke also highlighted the hypocrisy of their actions. He pointed out that prominent government officials, including the President and Vice President, have faced serious criminal charges, such as fraud and bribery. While he emphasized that he was not advocating for harm against anyone, Rickford Burke called for international scrutiny and legal action against those responsible for alleged crimes against humanity.

Rickford Burke also criticized the government’s approach toward the diaspora, claiming that it is fundamentally against their interests. He pledged to initiate an international campaign to expose the government’s stance and its treatment of black communities abroad.

Despite the government’s attempts to label him as a fugitive, Rickford Burke affirmed that he would not be silenced. He encouraged others to resist and fight for their rights, drawing parallels to other nations where similar circumstances have led to civil unrest. Stressing the importance of self-empowerment, Rickford Burke urged Guyanese citizens to stand up against the government’s abuses.
