Science has been an area that has piqued the interest of people across the globe. Traditionally, it is a male-dominated field, however, there are females who have made their mark, while others are preparing to leave their impact.

One such female is Carolann Correia – she is a medical science enthusiast who is passionate about leaving her mark in the field of science. She was born and raised in Georgetown.  Carolann was always fascinated by how things worked and has always been an avid science lover. While in high school, she pursued science and went to further her studies at the St. Roses High School, where she earned her associate degree in natural science.

She was determined to pursue her passion, and as such she is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Health Science degree, at the University of Guyana. “For me, the science field is very fascinating, and I find great interest in it. Over the years, I have watched countless documentaries, conducted experiments, and read many science books,” Carolann told this publication.

Passion for modelling

When Carolann is not reading, she’s also modelling. Models are often seen as glamorous public figures; however their journey is not always an easy one. Carolann is a well-known model, who has made a name for herself in the modelling industry. She started modelling because she wanted to overcome her insecurities, build confidence and inspire young girls.

“I also felt like I belonged in this space,” she said. In Guyana, the modelling industry is competitive, nonetheless she was determined to make her dream come true.  She started by participating in pageants and model casting calls – there she was able to showcase her talents, photogenic qualities, and gain exposure. Her fierce determination and unique look caught the eye of various agencies in the modelling industry.  Now Carolann, acts as a muse for photographers and a brand ambassador for various companies.

For her, juggling work, school, modelling and a business is hard. However with time management, she ensures that all her tasks are completed.  “I face many challenges daily. However, it’s not the challenges you encounter but how you deal with them and bounce back.  For me, when I get overwhelmed, I will give myself time to breathe and then remind myself of my goals and what exactly it is I want to achieve and why I’m putting in the work,” she posited.  Carolann launched Lanterns by C – a social business that sells lantern packages for various occasions.

In the future, she hopes to continue managing my own business, as well as expanding her business. Carolann would also like to further her studies in the health sciences field and perhaps, be a medical laboratory specialist. Her story is inspirational and highlights that with self-confidence, determination and hard work, anyone can be successful.  When asked for advice, Correia stressed, “Take the step. Don’t underestimate yourself. Don’t allow your fears to determine your future.”

ATLANTA — Dexter Scott King, the younger son of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, died Monday after battling prostate cancer. The King Center in Atlanta, which Dexter King served as chairman, said the 62-year-old son of the civil rights icon died at his home in Malibu, California. His wife, Leah Weber King, said in a statement that he died "peacefully in his sleep." The third of the Kings' four children, Dexter King was named for the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as a pastor when the Montgomery bus boycott launched him to national prominence in the wake of the 1955 arrest of Rosa Parks. Dexter King was just 7 years old when his father was assassinated in April 1968 while supporting striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. In his 2004 memoir, "Growing Up King," Dexter King recalled his father's slaying as the end of a carefree childhood. "Ever since I was seven, I've felt I must be formal," he wrote, adding: "Formality, seriousness, certitude — all these are difficult poses to maintain, even if you're a person with perfect equilibrium, with all the drama life throws at you." As an adult, Dexter King became an attorney and focused on shepherding his father's legacy and protecting the King family's intellectual property. In addition to serving as chairman of the King Center, he was also president of the King estate. RACE

In addition to his work with the King Center, Dexter King was known for the striking resemblance he bore to his father. They looked so much alike that the son ended up portraying his famous father in a 2002 TV movie about Parks. Coretta Scott King died in 2006, followed by the Kings' oldest child, Yolanda King, in 2007. "Words cannot express the heart break I feel from losing another sibling," the Rev. Bernice A. King, the youngest of the four, said in a statement. His older brother, Martin Luther King III, said: "The sudden shock is devastating. It is hard to have the right words at a moment like this. We ask for your prayers at this time for the entire King family."
