Guyana has descended into utter lawlessness

Dear Editor,

The Guyanese society has descended into utter lawlessness. The recent video of two male civilians attacking a uniformed Police Officer, while on duty, has made its way across the social media spectrum, nationally and internationally.

Thankfully, Editor, a “Good Samaritan” intervened amidst shouts of “beat he” laced with expletives. What was most worrisome is that the crowd seemed to be supporting this attack on a uniformed member of the Guyana Police Force.  Where is the respect for the Guyana Police Force? But then again, the lawlessness from the PPP regime itself, which has turned a blind eye and offered no redress to persons who should have received justice, is on full display for all to see.

This recent incident reminded me of two previous matters currently before the courts. One, where a policewoman was allegedly verbally assaulted by a lawyer, the son of former Chancellor of the Judiciary Carle Singh, while on duty at his residence; and secondly, in the November 2022 incident, where a bus driver attacked a young Police Officer at Sparendaam Police Station.

Editor, a breakdown of law and order in any society must be a matter of grave concern to all. The recent upsurge of parents attacking teachers in school compounds is another manifestation of the breakdown of law and order. Is it that persons have lost confidence in the system? Do they feel that it makes no sense making a report to those in authority, therefore they should take matters into their own hands? Can’t they comply and then complain? What are our sociologists saying? We must nip this in the bud to restore order and respect for authority before it escalates.

Editor, it is also TIME our laws be reviewed to make them more punitive and a deterrent to those who feel they can literally take the law into their own hands. Meanwhile, I hope that the persons from the three incidents mentioned will face the full brunt of the law, regardless of their affiliations, political or otherwise.

I end by appealing to ALL Guyanese to let us demonstrate what is recorded in the book of Matthew 25:31-40, “It’s natural for us to be our brother’s keeper. God is Love, and He made us to be caring and kind to others. God shows us how to be a keeper – what caring things to do and what to think.’

Yours truly,

Ms. Annette Ferguson, MP
