The National Congress of Women (NCW), the women’s arm of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has joined forces with the Guyana Press Association (GPA), other organisations and institutions to denounce recent violent attacks against female journalist, Ms. Davina Bagot of Kaieteur News.

In a statement, the women’s group referred to an online media allegedly sympathetic to the government as having “perpetuate[d] vile propaganda and character assignation” against the journalist.

“We, the proud, resilient women of NCW, reject and will continue to reject and push back against such attacks. We will use all avenues to ensure our women are respected and given equal opportunities.”

The women’s body in denouncing the attack stated, “an attack on one woman is an attack on all,” making known women stand united in resisting this blatant attack by the Facebook page titled, ‘Live in Guyana.’

NCW has demanded immediate cessation of the violation and called on civil society to denounce the atrocious behaviors, reiterating “women must be respected.”

According to the organisation, a cry for justice and gender equality remains further in the tunnel than the eyes can see, especially for women in Guyana. The NCW stated numerous similar incidents send a strong and loud message of the culture of abuse for women in Guyana.
