Five persons residing in Agricola, East Bank Demerara, were on Friday awarded some $23.2 million in contracts to execute low-level drainage works in the community. The project has a deadline of one month.
Each of the contractors are expected to hire residents of the community to execute the project. They were told by Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, to ensure they do the work properly, treat workers fairly and give them fair wages.
In the meantime, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic government continues to award hundreds of millions of dollars, and tens of billions of dollars to others to execute major contacts and has been unable to defend its record of discriminatory practices in the award of contracts.
Attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes, in a recent presentation titled ‘Economy and Justice in Guyana’ made to the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly- Guyana (IDPADA-G), presented data that shows African Guyanese are disproportionately awarded contracts compared to Indians Guyanese.
