In this week’s edition of our new column, Regional Roundup, we conducted an online survey of citizens of Region 1 of Guyana.  Region 1, Barima Waini is located in the northwestern part of the country, is facing several significant problems that are hampering its growth and development. These issues range from a lack of proper infrastructure and educational opportunities to poor health facilities and limited job opportunities. One resident who did not wish to be identified stated that, “while politicians may make promises to address problems in the region, it is essential to implement meaningful changes that can bring real relief to the region’s citizens”

One of the significant problems in Region 1 is poverty, which has affected the living standards of many residents. “The education system in Matthews Ridge, for instance, is severely lacking, and this has contributed to the high levels of poverty in the region.”, stated another citizen who also made the point that the lack of access to quality education makes it challenging for residents to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to secure better-paying jobs.

Another issue identified is the lack of job opportunities and training programs. This leaves many young people with nothing to do and no means of earning a livelihood, leading to idleness and frustration. This situation is made worse by the poor condition of the roads, which makes transportation difficult and expensive. The high cost of transportation is a major barrier to economic growth, as it limits access to markets and job opportunities.

Furthermore, the poor state of the roads also affects the children who attend school in the area. They have to navigate muddy and poorly maintained roads to get to school, which can be dangerous and unhealthy. Additionally, the high cost of transportation means that many families struggle to pay for bus fare, making it difficult for children to attend school regularly.

The lack of adequate health facilities is another major problem in region 1 identified on the survey. It is widely known that the region has a shortage of nurses, which means that residents often have to travel long distances to access basic healthcare services. This situation is particularly challenging for the elderly and those with chronic health conditions who require regular medical attention.
