Kerwin Charles is a distinguished alumnus of the University of Miami who graduated in 1989 with a degree in economics. He was born and raised in Guyana, South America, and his journey to the United States was not an easy one. However, he persevered and excelled in his academic pursuits, which led him to become the Dean of the Yale School of Management, holding the prestigious Indra Nooyi Dean position.

During his time at the University of Miami, Kerwin discovered his passion for economics. He stumbled upon an economics class, which was taught by his favorite professor of all time, Phil Robbins. This experience changed his life direction and helped him realize his potential in the field of economics.

Kerwin’s interest in economics stemmed from his curiosity about why some societies grow rich while others do not, despite having similar resources and potential. He was also interested in how humans interact and make decisions related to ownership, production, and employment. Economics allowed him to make sense of these questions and find order in seemingly disorderly situations.

Kerwin’s journey to becoming the Dean of the Yale School of Management was not an easy one, but his hard work, dedication, and passion for economics led him to achieve great success. He is a role model for students and aspiring leaders who want to make a difference in the world.

Kerwin returned to the University of Miami after more than two decades, where he sat down to discuss his journey and his life’s work.  His success is a testament to the value of education and hard work, and the University of Miami representatives stated that they were proud to claim a piece of him.  Guyana is also proud to claim a piece of him.
