Dear Editor,
As a concerned citizen of Guyana, I am disappointed with the recent actions of President Irfaan Ali. While he selectively condemned comments made at a public meeting held by the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), he remained silent on the atrocities committed against African Guyanese. This approach sends the wrong message to our society and creates further divisions.
It is quite apparent that the President did not condemn the Mocha atrocity, the spitting in the face of a Black woman, Minister Darhamlall’s ‘dildo’ comment, or the hitting of an APNU member of parliament. However, the President is now gaslighting the nation with selective outrage and condemnation of what he deems to be a WPA speaker’s racism.
As citizens, we believe that all forms of violence and discrimination should be unequivocally condemned. We call on President Ali to live up to his own words of “one Guyana” and work towards building a society where everyone is treated with respect and dignity. It is time for our leaders to unite us and work towards building a meaningful and harmonious nation.
Sincerely,
Shane Headley
