Dear Editor,

Kindly allow me to extend Republican Greetings to you, your team and by extension my Guyanese brothers and sisters. This Republic observance was made possible by the Late LFS Burnham who in February 1970, led Guyana to Republican status.

The Architect of Distraction: When the AG Trades the Courtroom for the Construction Site

This year’s theme for the fifty-third anniversary celebration is “Mixing and Mashing as One Guyana.” Editor, I have stated then and will say again that the pushing of this “one Guyana” concept is not working for all Guyana, only a few, who are closely affiliated to the PPP/C regime. The question I continue to ask myself, is why is the regime no longer comfortable with our inclusive National Motto, “One people, One nation, One destiny”?

What is worrying, is that some Guyanese are getting caught up with this FARCE of a one Guyana, when every day the regime expresses blatant disdain for some sections of the society. Editor, I am disgusted!

There is a video in circulation, which exposed the conduct of Regional Executive Officer, Mr. Donald Gajraj of the Demerara/Mahaica Region, towards Chairman of the Demerara/Mahaica Region, Mr. Daniel Seeram.  At the Region’s Republic Anniversary celebration on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the microphone was rudely and aggressively pulled from the hand of the Regional Chairman. This unprofessional and disrespectful act was done in the presence of other regional officials, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, school children and special invitees including the media.

It is now almost three years since the PPP/C government was installed and throughout this time their discrimination, lack of inclusion and blatant acts of racism have been the highlights of their time in office. Ancient Moral Philosopher, Socrates, stated, “To understand ethics one must distinguish good from evil, right from wrong, and to establish that, you must dig deep into the crevices of the human mind.” I can say without successful contradiction, that the PPP/C government has distanced itself from this philosophy. Their “one Guyana” theme is merely the theme of their propaganda media tour. It bears no resemblance to unity.

I conclude by reiterating that the attitude and action by the REO, Demerara-Mahaica Region towards the Regional Chairman was WRONG and call on the Region to take the necessary action. I commend Chairman Seeram for the maturity, strength, and class he displayed in his response to this crass act. Well done Chairman Seeram.

Yours truly,

Annette Ferguson

Member of Parliament
