Justice Desiree Bernard conferred doctorate from University of Guyana

Last Wednesday the University of Guyana (UG), in a simple ceremony in Trinidad and Tobago conferred with an Honourary Doctorate of Law on Justice Desiree Bernard.

This is Bernard’s second honourary doctorate.

In 2007 Bernard was conferred an Honourary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of the West Indies (UWI).

According to University of Guyana (UG)Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed, Bernard holds the distinction of being the only person nominated four times for the doctorate.

Bernard hold many others first, including the first female Judge of the High Court, Guyana (1980), First female to serve as an Court of Appeal, Guyana (1982),  first female Chief Justice (1996), first female Justice, Caribbean Court of Justice (2001)

At the simple ceremony in Trinidad, Justice Bernard was surrounded by jurists from the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Justice Adrian Saunders and Justice Maureen Rajnauth-Lee; a classmate from The Bishops High School; UG Vice Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed and Chancellor Professor Edward Green; and UWI Chancellor Dr. Marjorie Thrope, among others.

Attendees paid glowing tributes on Justice Bernard and spoke to her years of legal practice and endearing personality. In return Justice Bernard thanked those in attendance for being there and UG for conferring the doctorate.
