Dear Editor,
In addition to the accusations of gross corruption swirling around him, former President Jagdeo has been accused of presiding over, endorsing and encouraging extrajudicial killings and the imprisonment of individuals such as Mark Benschop. Additionally, many black professionals, like Juliet Allen-Holder were made to suffer egregious abuses for judicial decisions that were not in line with his evil intentions. Sometimes East Indian professionals suffered the same fate. Many public service professionals with long and illustrious careers were transferred far away from home to force them to resign under his leadership. Jagdeo’s reputation for brutal machinations are alleged to be unparalleled and I posit that he was a very abused child, now invoking his pain and wrath upon the Guyanese people. There are many who remain quiet in the face of Jagdeo’s abuses and these people are allowing Jagdeo to reduce them and to impinge upon their very humanity.
Jagdeo’s curse on Guyana will soon dissipate because it is not normal for most people to wake up with evil on their minds and darkness in their heart, like Jagdeo does. This is a suffering that is difficult for a normal human being to endure. This is evident in daily life in Guyana where citizens demonstrate their appreciation for a diverse society and a desire for peaceful coexistence. Despite any tensions, African Guyanese continue to purchase from East Indians, whom they have educated, nursed back to health, and inspired in various fields such as music, law, entertainment, and sports. The growing number of Guyanese of mixed African and East Indian heritage, or “dougla,” is a testament to the inter-relations between the two groups.
Many people believe that former President Jagdeo is a sociopath who is unable empathize with people and only uses them. They believe he lacks an understanding of love, and in many ways, he still resembles that abused child who continues to taint the nation with corrupt thoughts, words, and actions.
Jagdeo is taking a gamble that the African population can be subjugated and rendered irrelevant with the abundance of oil resources available. However, this will not come to fruition, and his actions will only lead to an uncontrollable state of civil unrest in Guyana. Despite warning signs, the nation is not heeding the potential consequences.
