  3. Rights of persons with disabilities

The programme is being implemented by the  International Foundation for Electoral Studies IFES Guyana and the Guyana Council Of Organisations For Persons With Disabilities

The program is supported by the USAID Eastern and Southern Caribbean Youth ALLIES program.

Guyanese with disabilities may note that citizens with disabilities are specifically catered for by Guyana’s laws. The Persons with Disabilities Act Chapter 36:05 ensures that Guyanese with disabilities are afforded equal opportunities as any other citizen.

The International community generally defines person with a disability as follows:

“Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.”
