The A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) said since the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government’s recent announcement of its miserly pay increases for public servants and the disciplined forces, several public servants and their representatives have publicly called on the government to be more generous.

“We have seen such calls on behalf of social care workers, the Guyana Prison Service, and the City Constabulary. We have seen calls from the public sector unions. We have seen calls in the press from persons, who chose not to attach their names to their letters—out of fear of reprisals from the PPP government. This is the state of ‘democracy’ under the PPP.”

The Opposition said it supports all these demands.

“The government can afford to and must pay more. Excuses about inflation are just that, lame excuses. Public servants must keep up the struggle for their economic rights. They must not relent in their efforts to ensure they can afford food and other necessities of life for the families. Theirs is a moral struggle—a struggle for dignity and comfortable existence. They, and all other oppressed Guyanese, can count on the Opposition to join in the fight.”
