President Irfaan Ali today announced the Government of Guyana will recall Charandass Persaud as High Commissioner to India.

The decision follows release yesterday of a reprehensible video recording, doing the social media round, of  Persaud assaulting Ms. Sonya Ghosh, an environmentalist and animal rights activist, outside his official residence in India.

Ali’s announcement comes after Guyanese, including the Opposition, have expressed their outrage at Persaud’s misbehavior and demanded his recall. The incident occurred on August 1, 2021, that is more than a year ago.

The matter would have been brought to the Government of Guyana’s attention, in keeping with diplomatic relations. The fact that was/is only yesterday or today the Government recalled Persaud lends to suspicions they were content to keep the abuse secret and have Persaud continue in his position as High Commissioner were it not for the revelation.
