Nima Flue-Bess MP- Today as we commission the newly refurbished Burnham Boulevard, it is important that the people be reminded of its importance to the people of Mocha Arcadia.
The refurbished road
Mocha and Arcadia were once two separated communities. However, having been made aware of conflicts between the two communities and the similarities they shared, the late Executive President L.F.S Burnham brought the villages together which saw the joint construction of Burnham Boulevard in his honour.
The road was opened in the 1970s. In 1994, with no support from PPP/C administration for infrastructure development, the people of Mocha Arcadia came together through the Mocha Arcadia Agency for A better Community and sought funding to undertake road works. Burnham Boulevard and Nelson streets were refurbished with clay bricks. That project was executed by contractors within the community. The road lasted for twenty plus years.
In 2019, the road was listed among the projects in the national budget, however due to the political climate the road was not done. In 2020, 2021 and 2022 the road was again resubmitted for rehabilitation through the Neighbourhood Democratic Council. It was raised by me on the floor of the National Assembly while our residents wrote letters to several agencies but again politics played a part in seeing residents not benefiting from proper infrastructure.
Our people deserve a decent life which includes proper infrastructure and as such should not be used as pawns by a government seeking to score political points. It should be noted that the for the people of Mocha Arcadia Burnham Boulevard is a reminder of the importance of unity.
