(GDF)- The Guyana Defence Force Credit Union, on Wednesday August 17, 2022, launched its mortgage scheme, allowing its members the opportunity to become homeowners.

Warrant Officer Class One Leyland Liverpool and Lance Corporal Akheen Harry are the first beneficiaries to receive their cheques, which was presented as part of the official launching ceremony, held at Credit Union Headquarters, Base Camp Ayanganna, Thomas Lands.

Chairman of the Committee of Management, Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts emphasised that the intent of this initiative is to facilitate home ownership for its members. The chairman also acknowledged the valuable input by his most recent predecessors, Brigadier (ret’d) Gary Beaton and Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Souvenir whom he noted were instrumental to the realisation of the initiative.

Colonel Roberts further noted, that in light of the opportunities which are being created with regards to improving home ownership, the management committee wanted to position the Credit Union and its members to benefit.

Manager of the Credit Union, Lieutenant Colonel Greasels Hinckson said that she is passionate about the initiative and satisfied with the strides in this regard, moreso the disbursement of the first two cheques at this occasion of the launch. She called on other members of the Credit Union to make good use of the facility.

Meanwhile, GDF-CU Credit Officer, Ms. Tansy Plowell explained that the union has come a long way, since the programme commenced on March 1, 2022. She explained that the process was not without challenges, however, she is pleased that all stakeholders will be able to benefit from the initiative. She revealed that already the Credit Union has received several other applications which will be processed shortly.

Warrant Officer Class One Leyland Liverpool expressed gratitude to the union and thanked them for giving him this opportunity. Explaining that given his age, it was impossible for him to approach the commercial banks and with this loan, he is now able to achieve home security.

Lance Corporal Ahkeen Harry, who was granted a house lot since 2018, explained that he is overwhelmed with happiness, to not only be one of the first to benefit from this initiative, but more importantly, becoming a homeowner.
