Over 500 persons have now died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Guyana with recent deaths pushing the toll to 503. A total of 339 or 67.40 percent of the deaths occurred in 2021 one while 164 persons or 32.60 percent died in 2020.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Health noted that there were four additional deaths, one each in Regions One, Three, Six and Ten which has increased the toll to 503. A total of 21 persons are currently in the COVID-19 ICU in need of extra care.
This is even as the total number of persons to have contracted the virus on record is 21,223 with Region Four accounting for 45.40 percent of these deaths at 9,635. While more females have contracted the virus than males, more males than females continue to die as a result. In fact, the recent four deaths recorded were all males between the ages of 43 and 83.
Amid the rising numbers, the Ministry of Health continues its vaccination campaign with over 240,300 receiving their first dose and over 123,000 receiving their second. It marks a some 117,000 plus gap between those partially and fully vaccinated.
