An early morning fire, which is suspected to be the work of an arsonist, has gutted a building and partially damaged  another at the corner of D’Urban and George Streets.

While details are sketchy, reports are that the fire was observed sometime around 02:00hrs on Thursday and when members of the Guyana Fire Service arrived, the flames were raging out of control.

A resident in the area told the Village Voice News that the fire may have been deliberately set since two men were seen scurrying away from the scene minutes before the inferno. The destroyed building housed a tire repair shop while several foreigners lived at the upper flat.

The fire service is investigating the cause of the fire.

This is the third fire within Georgetown since Saturday when the North Ruimveldt Multilateral was partially destroyed by fire. The cause of that fire is still being investigated. On Wednesday a property in Roxanne Burnham Gardens was also destroyed by fire. Several persons were left homeless following that blaze.
