…one air-dashed to the city
Three Rupununi men sustained multiple injuries about their bodies after they were attacked by a jaguar while trying to save a calf.
Injured are Terrence Lewis, his son Francis Lewis and Orlando Griffith. Lewis felt the brunt of the attack as he was the first person who went to save the calf.
Reports are that on Tuesday last , the men who live at Awarenawau village in the Deep South Rupununi, went to save the calf which was being mauled by the jaguar. They attempted to hit the giant cat with spears and in the process the animal turned towards them menacingly. The men managed to chase the animal into the forest but were rushed to the Aishalton hospital since their injuries were severe.
Lewis was flown to the city several days ago for further medical attention since his knee was almost ripped off by the animal.
Over the years , farmers and villagers in the Hinterland have faced an uphill task in addressing the issue of jaguars attacking their animals, mainly poultry. The issue became touchy when a farmer on the Essequibo Coast at the village of Lima ,trapped one of the animals. It was later taken into the custody of the Wildlife Commission.
