Injured inmate found dead on bed

The Lusignan Prison has been a scene of a number of violent attacks in recent months

A prisoner at the Lusignan, East Coast Demerara facility was on Sunday morning found dead on his bed, authorities there have confirmed.

In a statement the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) disclosed that at about 06:00hrs the Duty Officer at Lusignan Prison was in the process of unlocking the prisoners to washup, when he observed remand, inmate Roger Samuels lying on his bed motionless. Immediately, Doctor Britton and the Police Commander was informed of the situation.

Around 07:00hrs Dr. Britton conducted an examination on prisoner Samuels and pronounced him dead. He was housed in unit # 1 along with seven other inmates, the statement added. Police are currently investigating the matter.

Samuels of Lot 2606, Parfaite Harmony, West Bank Demera is said to be 44-year-old.

He was on remand on a charge of a larceny.
Please note, that Prisoner Samuels was admitted to prison with several injuries to his body which were inflicted by the public as a result of the alleged offence he committed.  The Prisoners’ Welfare Department is in the process of making contact with prisoner Samuels’ family.
The body will be taken to the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a   post- mortem examination to be conducted.
