The Civil Defence Commission (CDC), on Saturday, honoured ten of its volunteers for their dedicated and outstanding contributions, a statement from the Commission said.
The simple ceremony took place on the forecourt of its headquarters and saw the CDC’s Volunteer Corps presenting the tokens of appreciation.
Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips lauded the work done by the volunteers noting that “not only have your efforts been a tremendous support, it is through your leadership, initiative and enthusiasm that we are able to mark success in all aspects of development for Guyana. Specifically, in the area of disaster risk management volunteers have been at the forefront of risk assessments, community preparedness initiatives, institutional strengthening and even at the highest levels you have played important roles in policy development.”
The Prime Minister said that the volunteers have braved the elements in the roughest of terrains and the harshest of conditions to bring relief to those most in need.
“This year more than ever, you have demonstrated much valour in the fight against the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as you continue to stand in the frontlines alongside our health care workers and emergency response personnel. You have been instrumental in crafting COVID-19 education and awareness materials, promoting and fostering good sanitation and hygiene, and bringing aid to those hard hit by the pandemic,” he said.
Director General of CDC, Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig said that the ten volunteers were “recognised for their commitment, discipline, and tireless contributions in advancing disaster risk management in Guyana.”
He noted that despite the challenges of 2020 there was a continued desire to serve others even at great personal risks.
“The Civil Defence Commission joins the rest of the world in saluting the pertinent role that volunteers, young and old, play in lending vital support to causes that impact humanity”, said the Director General.
The awardees were Coreen Fiffee, Delisa Small, Judson Bess, Julian Cadogan, Micaela Reece, Quincy Scotland, Shameza David, Tashana Legal, Glendon Greenidge and Yolanda Edwards.
Partner agencies that were recognised for their support of the volunteer arm of the CDC included ExxonMobil, Rotary Club of Central Georgetown, Ruimveldt Lions Club and National Coordinating Collation.
