Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Monday at 07:10h on the Agricola Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) (eastern carriage way) and resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

According to reports, a truck driven by a 33-year-old male of Soesdyke Public Road, EBD hit the pedestrian whose name, age and address are unknown as he attempted to cross the Agricola Public Road.

The truck was proceeding north along the western drive lane of the eastern carriage way at the same time the third lane for north bound traffic was activated.
The 33-year-old truck driver, while in the vicinity of Agricola, observed a pedestrian standing on the median facing east of the center of the two carriage ways. The driver recounted that as he was in the process of passing, the said road, the pedestrian without looking south, walked east into the path of the truck.
“As a result, the front center portion of the lorry collided with the pedestrian who fell on to the roadway and the rear right side wheel ran over both legs of the pedestrian,” a statement from the Police said.

The unconscious pedestrian was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Emergency Unit, where he was seen and examined by a doctor on duty who treated him for head injuries, internal bleeding and broken feet. The pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at 07:30h on Tuesday.
The truck driver remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.
