Over 50 positive COVID-19 cases were recorded at the village of St Cuthbert’s Mission off the Soesdyke-Linden Highway within the past week and the popular Arawak village is set to go on lockdown this weekend.
Reports are that the positive COVID-19 cases may have been contracted by residents within the past 2 weeks and most of the persons who contracted the virus are below the age of 30. A number of children , some as young as 4 and 6 years old, have also tested positive for the virus. In addition , over a dozen elderly residents of the village have also contracted the virus.
The cases were recorded between Sunday and Wednesday and additional tests were carried out at the village this week. Those results are still pending.
Reports from villagers are that a popular, former village leader who is now a Member of Parliament, visited the village recently although he was tested positive for the pandemic. His family members are among those on the list of positive patients.
Village toshao Beverly Clenkian noted in a Facebook post on Thursday morning that the village will go on lockdown for two weeks. She said Friday is the last day for residents to do their shopping outside of the village.
Guyana has recorded 4393 positive cases of the deadly virus and the number of deaths continue to climb. On Thursday the Ministry of Public Health announced that an additional person died from complications attributed to the virus, carrying the total number of COVID deaths recorded in Guyana to 131.
