…as chair of G77, China
Guyana is preparing to host a high-level virtual Ministerial Meeting in its capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced on Wednesday.
The meeting, set for Thursday, October 29, 2020, will be held under “Maintaining a Low Carbon Development Path towards the 2030 Agenda in the Era of COVID-19”.
President Irfaan Ali; Vice-President, Bharrat Jagdeo; United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres; Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd; and representatives from over 130 countries will come together to address issues such as climate change and sustainable development within the context of a global COVID-19 recovery plan.
Guyana currently serves as the 2020 chair of the Group of 77 and China. Established on June 15, 1964, by 77 developing countries signatories, the Group has since grown to become the largest inter-governmental organization and presently serves as a platform for 134 Member States and China to articulate and promote collective economic interests and enhance joint negotiating capacity on all major international economic issues in the United Nations system.
