Residents of Chiung Mouth, Potaro-Siparuni ( Region Eight) will soon benefit from potable water as the Ministry of Housing and Water plans to dig a $19.3 million well in the community in time for Christmas.

Some 187 residents are to benefit from the well which was promised to the small farming community by the now Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues during the 2020 elections campaign.

Minister Rodrigues disclosed the Government’s plan to the community during an outreach on Monday.

“We chose the most critical project that would bring the most impact, that would bring the most benefit and relief to the villagers… the previous well was outside of the community and you had to walk a long distance to get the water. We will drill the well in the community and we will have the distribution network installed,” she said.
With this new project, the Minister said residents will benefit from jobs during the installation of the well.

The Minister said that with the well dug, the residents would also be able to benefit from individual connections to homes. She assured the people of Chiung Mouth that the project will be executed transparently.

“The well will now be in the community. I heard the previous well was outside of the community and you had to walk a long distance to get the water. We will drill the well in the community and we will have the distribution network installed,” Rodrigues told the residents.

The Minister said the installation of the distribution network will be done with community participation which will provide much needed jobs for the residents.

Meanwhile, Toshao Euseutact Augustine who welcomed the project, said it will bring relief  the community.

He said over the last two years villages depended on water from creeks or harvested rainwater. “It is long we have been suffering without water. I am glad to have this team providing Chiung Mouth Village with water, ” the Toshao said.

The contract for the construction of the well was awarded to R. Kissoon Contracting Services. The site for the well has already been identified and preparatory works are expected to start the first week in November.
