Guard arrested after gunmen invade Chinese supermarket

The security guard of a supermarket located on the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara has been arrested after gunmen invaded the premises Tuesday evening, carting off cash while beating their victims.

Police in a release said the robbery was committed on Zhi Shan Lim a Chinese National, age 48 yrs and Proprietor of Eugo Supermarket which is located at Lot 8 Melanie North East Coast Demerara.

The bandits escaped with: $ 1,400.000 cash;

One Samsung S8 cellphone valued unknown; a quantity of Digicel phone cards and one DVR valued unknown by four masked males, three of whom were armed with hand guns.

Enquiries revealed that the supermarket is located on the lower flat of a two flat wooden and concrete structure facing south and has on its premises a security guard from Sheriff Security that is contracted by the victim to provide security until the supermarket is closed.  On the date and time mentioned above the proprietor along with five other staff, all Chinese  Nationals, was in the supermarket when one of the suspects entered the and purchased two Guinness and went outside where he called the three other suspects into the supermarket.  While in the supermarket, one of the suspects went up to the security guard, a 21 year old male of Bachelor’s Adventure, ECD, who was armed with a 12 gauge single barrel shot gun, number unknown at this time, and five live rounds, and took away the said shotgun.

The other suspects simultaneously held the victim and the other staff at gun point.  One of the suspects then dealt Zhi Lu Lin a lash to left side of his head causing injuries while another suspect shot Zhi Shan Lin in the left lower foot and removed the articles mentioned above and escaped through the said southern door with the DVR.

The building was checked and the area searched but none of the suspects was found. Several persons in the area were questioned and information received from a student that four masked men, one of whom was armed with a shot gun confronted him while he was driving his car but he took evasive action and heard a gun shot but he was not injured nor his car damaged.  He drove to Vigilance Police Station and reported same.

Both of the injured victims were escorted to Balwant Singh Hospital where they were treated and sent away. The security guard was arrested and  placed in custody and is assisting with the investigation.
