Dear Editor
Unfortunately, too many police officers in Guyana are afraid to stand for justice and independence of the Guyana Police Force from political interference. Since the conclusion of the elections on August 2, 20202, Guyanese, the Caribbean region and others around the world have witnessed blatant political interference in the Guyana Police Force by members of the People’s Progressive Party, including Robeson Benn and Charles Ramson who both questioned officials of the former APU+AFC Coalition Government in the presence of police officers at the CID Headquarters. The People’s Progressive Party has also implanted police officers with a history of corruption and criminal inclinations in the CID and other offices to help the party target political rivals and intimidate supporters of the APNU+AFCE Coalition.
Why do these officers and leaders within the police force allow themselves to be dictated to and used by political operatives and representatives instead of fulfilling their mandate to serve and protect without fear or favour? Why do these officers allow these operatives and representatives to continually diminish the integrity of the force and its members while creating social unrest? Can the police force see that corruption within the force, failure to carry out their duties without fear or favour and continued political interference breeds social unrest, a lack of trust in the police force and vigilante justice? Don’t these members of the police force understand that they and their families have to experience the mess they are helping to create by engaging in corrupt deeds and carrying out political favours?
The secret to the success to the USA, Europe, Africans nations such as Rwanda, South Africa, Asian nations like Japan, South Korea and other examples of progressively developed societies is that they understand that in order for a society to sustainably prosper and to remain peaceful the law must apply to everyone regardless of political affiliation, socioeconomic status and so on. I call on all right-thinking members of the police force who wish to experience a more peace and less corrupt society to collectively take a stand against corruption and political interference in your work and sworn duty to serve and protect the people of Guyana, not the politicians of Guyana.
Regards
