Police assaulted by motorist on Harbour Bridge

Jamal Wilson, the assaulted policeman

A policeman was on Friday evening assaulted by a motorist on the western side of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

The policeman identified as Jamal Wilson, who is attached to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, was on duty at the time of the assault. Wilson was directing traffic when the driver of a motorcar PVV 1211 reportedly breached the traffic protocols. The policeman confronted the motorist and instructed him to “get back in line”. The motorist reportedly exited his car and punched Wilson to his face, stomach. The policeman was also pushed into a barricade.

The motorist was apprehended by another policeman who was also on duty and public spirited citizens while Wilson was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) where he received medical treatment and was sent away.

Meanwhile, when contacted Public Relations and Press Officer of the Guyana Police Force, Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor, said the motorist is in police custody and the matter is being investigated.
