Dear Editor

Members of the People’s National Congress in the Essequibo Islands-West Demerara Region (No.3) have expressed their expectation that the Supreme Court will hear the petition about irregularities in the recent General and Regional Elections expeditiously.

Persons who had served as scrutineers in the National Recount of ballots at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre explained that they had seen evidence of ballots having been cast in the names of persons who were dead or were living out of the country on election day. They noted, too, that some ballot boxes were without valid documentation and that counterfoils were missing for ballots in scores of boxes.

These views were expressed to former President and PNC Leader David Granger who, accompanied by General Secretary Amna Ally and Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon, visited the PNC Regional Head Office at Vreed en Hoop to meet Party executives.

Granger thanked the Region for mounting a magnificent campaign rally at Leonora Track and Field Athletics Centre on 31st January and for increasing the Coalition’s tally of votes at the 2nd March elections.

The PNC leader took the opportunity to congratulate Ganesh Mahipaul on his election to the National Assembly. Mahipaul, a university graduate and one of the youngest candidates in the APNU+AFC Coalition, has parliamentary oversight of Local Government and Regional Development and the Public Service.

Granger encouraged councilors to represent their constituents robustly in the Regional and Neighborhood Democratic Councils and to visit the communities and villages in the Region regularly.
