Region Six (East Berbice Corentyne) has now confirmed seven Covid-19 cases five of which include Cuban nationals who arrived in Guyana via backtrack days ago.
The five nationals after arriving in Guyana were arrested by police and subsequently placed in quarantine. Tests were conducted on all five of them. After serving the 14 days in quarantine they were expected to be placed before the court to face charges for illegal entry and breaching COVID-19 regulations.
However, their test results have returned and were confirmed on Wednesday by Region’s Six, Chairman David Armogan that the five Cuban nationals have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. They have since been taken into isolation. Two other Guyanese have also tested positive, an East Canje resident who was hospitalized at the New Amsterdam Hospital and was showing symptoms of the virus, after being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital she was then tested for the virus which came back positive.
Even though the woman had exhibited symptoms of Covid-19 while a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital it is still yet unknown why she was not tested while at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Meanwhile, Jagdeo Mohan a Corentyne resident who is on the run have tested positive for the virus after arriving in Guyana from a repatriation flight. The man who was expected to be in quarantine as he awaits the test results have gone into hiding and health officials along with the police are seeking his whereabouts to take him into isolation. Contact tracing for all positive patients in the region have begun.
