As the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) accelerates its efforts to distribute potable water to all citizens, it has warned against persons tampering with pipelines.
Georgetown Regional Manager (ag) Eson Pearson said this illegal practice can cause immense health issues and other serious consequences.
“Sometimes persons install illegal connections which do not have the requisite fittings, as such the water becomes contaminated. This is a challenge we face every day,” Pearson said during an appearance on 97.5 FM.
He asserted that GWI aims is to ensure that every customer is satisfied with the quality and quantity of water supplied.
Pearson stressed the importance of persons reporting any breakages in pipelines when y observed; especially in areas where contractors are undergoing groundworks.
“These operations disrupt the service of residents and the community and also contaminate the water. We need to get to these locations as early as possible and address these situations immediately,” he emphasised.
Meanwhile, Revenue Manager (ag), Tomesia Dundas spoke of the challenges field workers face with while performing their daily duties.
Dundas noted that these issues can be addressed but the cooperation of residents is essential in this effort. For example, she noted that residents can keep their pets locked up when they observe meter readers in their communities.
Also, if a customer is aware that a meter reader visited while they away, a photograph of the meter can be sent to GWI’s WhatsApp numbers 6232995 or 6201667 and a representative will respond.
