Well-known, Washington DC Attorney, Bart Fisher has made it clear that the United States of America has no legal basis to impose sanctions on Guyana if the Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) declares a winner of the March 2, General and Regional Elections based on valid votes.
Fisher rubbished calls for sanctions by the opposition party and its allies as “loose talk”. He labelled these calls as their “way of attempting to intimidate the court and government officials.”
He noted that GECOM’s job is to produce a credible result based on valid votes and to not accept votes that are not credible.
According to Fisher, the US Government has to abide by the local legal electoral process and work cooperatively with the legitimately elected Government of Guyana.
“And so, they will be no legal authority in the United States to impose sanctions in this situation. I just wanted to nail that one right out of the box because there has been a lot of loose talk about that,” Fisher stated during an appearance on the radio show ‘Straight Up,’ Saturday last.
He opined that if the election process is properly followed, the winner would be the APNU+AFC Coalition.
The Washington DC Attorney said there should be no interference in the ongoing process and explained that there is always an opportunity to petition after the exercise but the process must run its course.
“… the point is you need a credible result and if you have that based on valid votes there is no legal authority to impose sanctions,” he reiterated.
