Venezuelans nabbed with arms, ammo …three held for ganja farming at Sugar Hill

Two Venezuelan nationals were on Friday night arrested by police after being found with arms and ammunition and three farmers in the Barima-Waini region were also held following a anti-drug operation at Sugar Hill.

In the first incident police ranks conducting a mobile patrol in the community of Meten – Meer-Zorg , WCD on Friday, were alerted by residents of the suspicious behaviour of two males in the area.
As a result the individuals, one of whom resides in the same village and the other at Cornelia Ida, WCD were contacted.
They were searched and an unlicensed revolver with four live rounds  was found in possession of the one who is residing in the community.
The suspects, both nationals of a neighbouring country are in custody assisting with the investigation.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident

police about 09:15h went to the dwelling house of a Sugar Hill, Wauna, North West District farmer to investigate a report of larceny and found a quantity of freshly-harvested suspected cannabis.
The farmer , 55, and his 30- year -old son who is also a farmer were present at the time and were promptly detained.
According to the police based on information they provided, a joint team comprising police and soldiers went to a location in the Sugar Hill area and found about an acre of cannabis cultivation.
The field had about two thousand plants measuring between two to eight feet in height with an estimated weight of three hundred and sixty-four kilograms.

A 37-year-old farmer was also detained in a camp erected on the same plot of land. The area was photographed, samples of the plants obtained for analysis after which the cultivation and camp were destroyed by fire.
The prohibited substance found at the farmers’ home amounted to 12.74 kilograms.

The three suspects who  have reportedly admitted to cultivating the prohibited plants, are in custody pending charges.
