Labour Day Divide: Patronage, Power, and the Betrayal of Workers

Dear Editor,
Since my previous letter, there have been significant developments within Guyana Power and Light (GPL). The previously mentioned billing manager has tendered his resignation, and several staff members implicated in the reported misconduct have been placed on administrative leave. However, this development has stirred discontent among many female staff members, as it appears to allow him to depart on his own terms despite the serious nature of the allegations.
Compounding the issue, neither the Ministry of Labour nor the Ministry of Social Protection has been called in to investigate these wrongdoings, leaving many female staff members feeling neglected and disheartened. The lack of intervention is perceived as a disregard for their well-being, especially given the sensitive nature of the reported misconduct.
GPL’s silence on these matters raises further questions about the organization’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its staff. Despite several staff members being placed on administrative leave, the key figures implicated in the allegations still maintain their positions, suggesting a potential lack of accountability within the organization.
Furthermore, it is disheartening to note that staff members who are perceived as writing letters addressing these issues are reportedly facing victimization. This creates an environment of fear and stifles the ability of employees to voice their concerns freely
I strongly implore the CEO to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation, considering the apparent suppression of information exposed in previous letters and the continued presence of the chief architects of these alleged corrupt practices. This situation has created a perception that staff concerns were not taken seriously, or worse, that there may be involvement by the Director and Customer Services Manager.
Additionally, there is a prevailing sentiment among staff that those on administrative leave may eventually return, raising concerns about the effectiveness of such measures. Ensuring a fair investigation and implementing transparent processes are crucial steps to rebuild trust within the organization.
I trust that the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Social Protection will be invited to play a pivotal role in addressing these serious allegations.
Yours truly ,
Hemchand Pooran
