STEMGuyana and the Girl Guides Organization teamed up to launch a powerful initiative aimed at empowering young girls in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), STEMGuyana has joined forces with the Girl Guides Association to host an enlightening robotics workshop. This collaboration marks the beginning of a comprehensive agreement to foster an environment that encourages and supports girls in pursuing STEM disciplines across various regions of Guyana.

Today’s workshop saw enthusiastic participation from both coaches and young aspirants, with engaging sessions between the experienced coaches and the eager participants. The young coaches Italy Ton Chung, T’Sahai Holder and Xaria Holder are no strangers to the world of STEM; they were part of Guyana’s first all-girls robotics team, which made an impressive mark by securing the 5th position among the eight teams that advanced to the finals in the first Global Robotics Competition held in Singapore in October 2023, an event that saw participation from over 180 countries.

The workshop, characterized by hands-on training sessions, aimed not just at imparting technical skills but also at instilling confidence and a sense of accomplishment among the young Girl Guides. The focus on robotics serves as a practical and engaging medium to introduce these young minds to the broader possibilities within the STEM fields.

STEMGuyana Operations Manager, Alisha Koulen who was also part of the team stated that “this initiative is part of a broader, long-term strategy to systematically introduce and integrate STEM education among girls throughout Guyana. By bringing such programs to various regions, STEMGuyana and the Girl Guides Association are laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and diverse STEM community in the future.”

The collaboration between STEMGuyana and the Girl Guides is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of gender diversity in STEM fields. By leveraging the success and experience of Guyana’s all-girls robotics team, this program not only celebrates their achievements but also uses their journey as an inspiration for the next generation of female STEM enthusiasts.

As this partnership unfolds, it promises to bring new opportunities, inspire more young girls to explore STEM, and break down the barriers that have historically deterred female participation in these fields. The message is clear, the future of STEM in Guyana is inclusive, and it begins with initiatives like these that pave the way for young girls to dream big and achieve even bigger in the world of science and technology.
