Concerns Regarding Privileged Teachers’ (Bishops, Queens College, St Roses) Response to the Strike

Dear Editor,

I write to express my concerns about a disheartening trend I have observed during the ongoing strike within the education sector. It is disconcerting to note that teachers hailing from prestigious institutions such as Bishops, Queens College, and St. Roses are opting to break the strike, earning them the pejorative label of “scabs.” This development prompts me to reflect on the values we impart to our future leaders.

Perception of Bias Threatens Barima Inquiry’s Credibility

These educators, while enjoying the privilege of teaching in the most well-appointed classrooms, pristine environments, and state-of-the-art buildings, appear to lack the courage to stand up for their own rights. Instead, they seem content to let others fight on their behalf, choosing the path of least resistance.

What concerns me the most is the message this sends to the students under their care. These institutions are entrusted with educating the best and brightest, nurturing the future leaders of our society. However, the lesson being conveyed is one of complacency, an acceptance of playing it safe, and a willingness to rely on others to fight their battles.

If these esteemed schools are indeed shaping the leaders of tomorrow, we should be alarmed. The message being instilled in our future leaders should be one of courage, resilience, and a commitment to standing up for what is right. Instead, the current message is one of passivity, and it raises questions about the values we are instilling in the next generation.

As we look to the future, our educational institutions must prepare students not only with academic knowledge but also with the values and qualities that will make them strong and responsible leaders. The current situation, where privileged teachers choose to break the strike, is a reminder that there is much work to be done in this regard.

Sincerely,

Shane Headley
