KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former St. Mary Western Member of Parliament Jolyan Silvera has been charged with murder, after he was arrested on Thursday and questioned by police from the Major Investigations Division in relation to the death of his wife Melissa.
Melissa Silvera Melissa Silvera was found dead on November 10, 2023 and initial reports suggested she had died in her sleep of natural causes.
However, an autopsy later revealed that at least three bullet fragments were found in Mrs. Silvera’s body. The police opened a murder investigation after an autopsy later revealed the presence of bullet fragments in her body.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of crime, Fitz Bailey, has said there was sufficient evidence to prosecute the former member of Parliament for the death of his wife, Melissa.
Mr. Silvera was picked up Thursday by detectives attached to the Major Investigation Division.
Attorney Peter Champagnie says Mr. Silvera is maintaining his innocence. “I have to respect the process in terms of my own client’s position. It would be very, very irresponsible to go into any details. And one has to be professional at all times.
DCP Bailey said Silvera was taken into custody as a suspect following consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
“Several lines of inquiry were drawn during the investigative process and [we] satisfied ourselves that there is sufficient evidence to mount a viable prosecution,” he explained.
The development comes six days after Melissa Silvera was laid to rest on January 12. DCP Bailey said comprehensive work is being done to uncover answers in the case, so justice can be delivered to the family of the deceased.
“We understand the concerns of the public and this update is provided to assure that our work is ongoing and focused on seeking the truth,” he said as he thanked other stakeholders for playing a “pivotal role in the exhaustive and meticulous process of unearthing critical evidence”.
While a large-scale, multi-agency investigation is ongoing, the police are still appealing for any information that could further strengthen their case.
“We encourage anyone who may possess valuable information related to this investigation to assist us in our pursuit of justice. Your cooperation is critical in helping us to better piece together the puzzle. Your trust and collaboration play a vital role in upholding the values of justice and security that we strive to provide,” said the deputy commissioner.
