I have been traveling for the last 48 hours and now catching up on local news. I am deeply troubled. The freefall into a full-fledged dictatorship is on display for all to see and EVERY Guyanese must be concerned with these recent developments.

Bharrat Jagdeo intends again to use the State apparatus against anyone he considers his political opponent. A compliant police force and DPP means that he will have his way unless the Guyanese stop him.

The recent attempt to serve criminal proceedings on Rickford Burke in the USA is so ludicrous that even the Attorney General, who is usually front and center on these matters, has refused to comment.  He knows that Jagdeo is engaging in transnational repression, and he knows that it is against US law.

Now Jagdeo has set his sights on social media influencers. It is interesting that he has not breathe a condemnatory word against the corruption that these social media influencers expose, nor has he decried the injustices against the people of Guyana that these influencers highlight. Instead, he has decided to dedicate his energies towards the suppression and silencing of dissenting voices; and, sadly, in this, he is being cheered on by individuals who either do not or refuse to understand the difference between giving themselves to a cause and surrendering to a dictator.

History is replete with examples of what happens when citizens fail to speak up against authoritarian governments. 𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭, 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐮𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚.
