NOTE: This article is about an influential individual who’s probably controversial actions are currently changing the world, and may shape the future of humanity either for better or worse.

By Mark DaCosta- Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He is known mostly for being the wealthiest man who has ever lived. His net worth is currently estimated at US$225.3 billion. He is also regarded as being a visionary entrepreneur and engineer who has made significant contributions to the fields of technology, transportation, and renewable energy. Musk’s relentless pursuit of innovation, his ambitious goals, and innovative projects have earned him a reputation as one of the most influential figures of the 21st century. At the same time, Musk – particularly in recent years – is being viewed by the public as an increasingly controversial figure. That view stems from his seemingly often eccentric business decisions, extreme political views, and arguably bizarre world outlook. Many analysts have expressed concern because his enormous wealth gives tremendous influence and power to an apparently unstable man.

From an early age, Musk displayed an aptitude for technology. At the age of 12, he taught himself computer programming and developed a video game called Blastar, which he sold for $500. This early success may have set the tone for his future endeavors and set the stage for his subsequent actions.

After completing his studies in South Africa, Musk moved to the United States to pursue higher education. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor’s degrees in physics and economics. Following his graduation, Musk co-founded Zip2, a software company that provided business directories and maps for newspapers. The company’s success caught the attention of Compaq, which acquired Zip2 for $307 million in 1999, providing Musk with his first significant financial windfall at that time.

After the sale of Zip2, Musk set his sights on the financial industry. In 1999, he co-founded X.com, an online payment company. X.com later became PayPal, which quickly gained popularity as a secure and convenient way to transfer money. PayPal’s success attracted the attention of eBay, which bought the company in 2002 for $1.5 billion. Musk, who was the largest shareholder, received a huge payout from the deal.

Having achieved financial success, Elon Musk turned his attention to his lifelong passion for space exploration. In 2002, he founded SpaceX with the goal of reducing the cost of space travel and eventually colonising Mars. At first, SpaceX faced numerous challenges and setbacks including explosions of its rockets and other technical failures. But Musk didn’t give up. In 2008, SpaceX became the first privately-funded company to launch a liquid-fueled rocket into orbit.

In addition to SpaceX, Musk is famous for his significant contributions to the electric vehicle industry. In 2004, he joined Tesla Motors – now Tesla, Inc. – an electric car manufacturer, as chairman. He later became its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Musk transformed Tesla from a niche electric car company into a global powerhouse. Tesla introduced groundbreaking electric vehicles like the Model S, Model3, and Model X, thereby revolutionising the automotive industry and accelerating the worldwide transition to sustainable transportation.

Elon Musk’s commitment to sustainable energy extends beyond electric vehicles. For example, in 2006, he co-founded SolarCity, an energy services company  focused on making solar power more accessible and affordable. Clearly, at a very early time,  Musk had recognised the need to transition to renewable energy sources to combat climate change.

In addition to his work with SpaceX, Tesla, and SolarCity, Musk has also ventured into other ambitious – but probably controversial projects. He co-founded a company called Neuralink. That company is focused on developing implantable brain-machine interfaces – a computer chip in the brain – to enhance human cognitive abilities. Musk has said that his vision for Neuralink is to create a direct link between humans and artificial intelligence, enabling us to keep pace with the rapid advancements in technology. However, this stated goal has raised many scientific eyebrows. Questions – including ethical ones – are being raised by analysts regarding whether or not Musk is going too far.

While his numerous achievements are known and acknowledged, Musk has faced criticism and skepticism. His ambitious, often outlandish goals, and his unconventional, frequently eccentric approaches have sometimes been met with frowns by observers. All the same, the richest man on earth remains undeterred. He continues to push boundaries, challenge the status quo and, think big.

Elon Musk initiated an acquisition of the social media company Twitter on April 14, 2022, and concluded it on October 27, 2022. Since then, he has made massive changes to the company including firing most of the employees and changing the name of the platform to X.

Before Musk acquired the company, he was known to post (tweet) views that were often viewed by observers as quite eccentric. For example, he has expressed support for capital punishment and a coup in Bolivia. He also interfered in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine using his Starlink communications system. He has, too, expressed unpopular opinions about China’s claim to Taiwan.

In recent times, Musk has used his social media platform to express increasingly extreme political views.

While Elon Musk’s impact on technology, transportation, and renewable energy cannot be overstated, his unorthodox, and sometimes controversial manner of doing things is often characterised by observers as quite strange. In any case, his pursuit of innovation has certainly earned him a place among the most influential figures of our time. And regardless of the final outcome of his legacy, Elon Musk will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on generations to come.
