…after stealing haversack containing $3M from Corentyne businessman

Three men were on Monday morning charged for simple larceny committed on businessman Deonarine Harripersaud of #Nauth Village, East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) on Friday.

The men, 40-year-old Quacy Fung-a-fat of Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD), 58-year-old Afzal Khan of Chateau Margot, ECD and 32-year-old Jason Staunton of the East Bank Demerara (EBD) all appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the Whim Magistrates’ Court.
They were charged under Section 164 of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01. However, the matter was transferred to the #51 Police Station and the accused, who pleaded not guilty, will make their second appearance in court on December 23, 2020.

They have each been placed on $250,000 bail and were instructed to lodge their passports and report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.
On Friday last, the three men stole a haversack containing over $3M in both local and foreign currency from Harripersaud’s parked car.
According to an initial report by the Police, the businessman visited two banks in Corriverton where he withdrew money. Upon completion at the second bank, the man placed the money into his haversack which was then stored in the front seat of his vehicle.

Harripersaud then drove to the No. 66 Village Fishery Co-op where he parked his vehicle on the road and then proceeded to speak with some of his workers who were, at the time of his arrival, fixing his boat.

The businessman told Village Voice News that while his car has an alarm system installed, it was not triggered when the men entered his car.
“My boat was fixing so I had to drop something for them boys to work on it. So while there, the girl next door ask me if I send someone to my car and I told her no and then is when she tell me somebody open the car, take out a bag and gone with it. We raise an alarm from there and contacted a few police stations,” the man recounted.

Shortly after, Police along Corentyne coast were alerted and the trio was intercepted at Liverpool Village. A search was conducted by Police and the haversack with the money was retrieved and the trio arrested.

“I’m thankful that I got back everything, my ID, the money, passport and everything. They didn’t get to move out anything from the bag. The police did a great job and I’m happy that I get back that money. It was G$3,019,000 and Sr$7,750,” Harripersaud told Village Voice News.

The man recounted that he was robbed of G$600,000 late last year at Mahaica, Region Five. “I wasn’t expecting to get back that money because it’s a lot but the Police act quickly and I must commend them for that,” he told Village Voice News.
Harripersaud also owns and operates a supermarket at # Nauth Village.
