Dear Council Members,

I am writing to express my concerns over the recent decision regarding the signatory to vouchers, particularly the involvement of the mayor in this process. As a former mayor who served this great city for five years, I feel compelled to share my thoughts on this matter and urge you to review and reconsider this decision.

Recently, I became aware that the Mayor himself is one of the two signatories to vouchers and additionally sits on the Finance Committee. While I acknowledge and appreciate the strong commitment the council has demonstrated towards the betterment of our city, I urge council to reconsider this arrangement. As a former mayor who served for five years, I firmly believe that it is essential for the Mayor to refrain from acting as a signatory to vouchers and serving on the Finance Committee. It is a dangerous precedent this current council is setting for future council.

Transparency, both in terms of financial matters and decision-making processes, is of utmost importance for an effective governance structure. By willingly taking on these roles, there is a risk of blurring the distinction between the office of the Mayor and financial oversight, potentially leading to conflicts of interest or a compromised system. As public officials, our primary responsibility is to act in the best interest of the residents of Georgetown, and allowing the Mayor to hold these positions hinders our ability to ensure a fair and just administration.

I understand that the Mayor has demonstrated a strong commitment to the city, and this letter should not be taken as a personal attack on his character or abilities. My intention is solely to emphasize the importance of separating powers and preserving a strong and accountable governance structure for our beloved city.

I kindly request that the Mayor and City Council take the time to review the current arrangement and give careful consideration to the potential ramifications it may have on the principles of transparency and accountability. I urge you to prioritize the implementation of effective accounting systems and ensure that the Finance Committee remains an impartial body.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that you will carefully evaluate the points I have raised and make the necessary adjustments to strengthen the governance of Georgetown, thereby fostering an environment of trust and cooperation among its citizens.

Pt. Ubraj Narine JP,COA
Former Mayor
City of Georgetown
