The community of Prospect Housing Development, East Bank Demerara (EBD) now has potable water as the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has installed and connected transmission pipelines to the Covent Garden water supply system.
The community consists of approximately 90 households. In a statement, GWI said that residents are required to apply for their individual service connections, after which the installation will occur.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues had visited the community two weeks ago and promised to have potable water installed.
The minister returned to the community today where GWI’s East Bank team was working to conduct on site applications and the installation of service connections simultaneously.
“To facilitate the process, we thought instead of having these persons go to the office, we brought the office and we brought the service to the community,” Minister Rodrigues said.
In the short-term, the residents will benefit from water supply at a stand pipe level while in the long-term, the minister committed to having a well dug in the community.
A resident, Tricia Williams who has been living in the community for two months sees the provision of water as a great benefit. In the past, she walked two streets to fetch water and had to make several trips in order to fill her barrel. Otherwise, she depended on the rain.
Sharon King- Harris said she was accessing water from the back of her house but that in and of itself was challenging because of the high vegetation and the dangers which came with that. She has been living in Prospect since July 2019.
Another resident said that she had, for over a year, delayed moving into her house due to the absence of a water supply. She said that she is now relieved that her water fetching days are over due to the Ministry’s intervention.
