The Institute For Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) joins with all right-thinking organisations and citizens in demanding an impartial investigation into the allegation of sexual abuse committed on an Indigenous female adolescent by the Minister of Regional Development and Local Government Nigel Dharamlall.

IFAAD acknowledges the abuse of power is a systemic problem within society and is concomitant with sexual violence, which is not only traumatic, but the burden of coming forward can be difficult and isolating for the victims.  The organisation applauds the teen for her coverage and steadfastness in seeking justice. Given the aforementioned, we further demand that the accused minister resign his post forthwith or be fired.

The organisation cannot stress enough that nothing can justify the alleged action by the powerful minister and the brutal and gruesome violation of an innocent child. The Ali Administration is therefore being called on to facilitate a speedy, professional, and independent investigation into the report and seek ways to extend meaningful support to the victim.

Finally, IFAAD emphasises that protecting children is a whole-of-society responsibility. Families and community members must be vigilant, educated, and aware of signs of sexual abuse to complement government and civil society’s efforts in promoting and protecting human rights, moreover children’s rights, and the dignity of other vulnerable groups in our country.
