Guyana win nailbiter to deny Leeward Islands their first ever victory

Shabika Gajnabi held her nerves bowling the final over to deny the Leeward Islands their first ever victory in the history of the CG United Women’s Super50 Cup, to give Guyana a one-run victory.

Batting first, Guyana was in all sorts of trouble with the score on 53-6 but a 68-run partnership between Shabika Gajnabi and Kaysia Schultz saved their innings at Warner Park. Gajnabi top-scored with 49 and Schultz 25, as Guyana closed their innings on 167-9 from their 50 overs. Tonya Martin who destroyed the Guyanese top order finished career best figures of 10-1-36-4.

A career best 74 from Amanda Edwards was not enough to secure the Leewards first ever victory as Gajnabi picked up with the ball where she left off with the bat. Supporting with the ball was Sheneta Grimmond who bagged 10-3-26-3, to add to Gajnabi’s 8-0-31-2 and Plaffianna Millington’s 10-1-26-2. Needing five runs in three balls, the Leewards were stifled for runs by Gajnabi’s accurate bowling and good fielding from her teammates.

The tournament resumes on Monday 15 May with Round 4. Barbados face vs the Windward Islands at St. Paul’s, Trinidad & Tobago Red Force Divas vs the Leeward Islands at Conroe Sports Ground and Jamaica meet Guyana at Warner Park (Windiescricket).
