Was it PM Mark Phillips or AG Anil Nandlall who advised the president to breach the constitution?

Dear Editor,

Last week, it was announced that Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Phillips, was the one who advised the President to breach the constitution by firing Paul Slowe, rather than legal luminary AG Anil Nandlall. This news has confused the citizens of Guyana, and we seek clarification on the matter.

It is alleged in some quarters that the esteemed legal expert, Anil Nandlall, may have been the one responsible for this decision and that the PM’s role was to ‘take the fall’. In light of this, it is crucial that we receive clarification on whether it was PM Mark Phillips or Nandlall who advised an appeal on this matter. This information will allow us to attribute responsibility to the appropriate party.

If the Prime Minister did indeed advise such an action, we urge him to provide the logic behind his decision. However, we doubt he was truly responsible because he is not known to be a legal mind, the issue was too important to relegate to the former military leader PM Phillips and the recent vigorous defense and declaration of pending appeal by the Attorney General Nandlall are dead giveaways about who the responsible party really is.

As concerned citizens, we need clarity on who is advising the President on this issue. Is it the Prime Minister or the legal luminary AG Anil Nandlall? Additionally.  If an appeal is to be made, we need to know today who is advising the President on this matter.

Transparency and honesty are crucial for building trust in our elected officials. Therefore, we implore the Prime Minister and the Attorney General and all those involved to provide us with the clarity we need.

Sincerely,
Shane Headley
