The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) will be contesting in all the local authorities at the Local Government Elections scheduled for June 12. So said the party’s General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo, during a press conference Thursday at Freedom House, Georgetown.

Comparatively the PPP/C’s governance record does not equate to the coalition. According to the Transparency International, Guyana was improving on the Corruption Perception Index under the APNU+AFC government. Prior to that Guyana was ranked the most corrupt English-speaking country in the Caribbean.

During President Irfaan Ali’s first year in office Guyana fell by two points on the Corruption Index report, showing a rise in corruption. Last year Guyana improved by one point.

However, there is growing concern and public outcries that corruption is rising again as the government does not allow for the sitting of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee to allow for oversight of government spending and the absence of accountability for the disbursement of various cash grants.
