Innovation is a precious gift that can propel a country forward. However, not all countries appreciate their innovators equally. Some countries discriminate against their innovators based on race, gender, or other factors, resulting in wasted potential and missed opportunities.  The United States in contrast, attempts to identify talented people every step of the way.  Whether in sports, STEM, the arts or any sector, the United States, understanding the importance of innovation has created structures in schools and even offers funding to civil society organizations to identify, nurture, resource and inspire their young talents.  China, another innovation giant does the same.

To foster innovation, countries need to create an environment that supports and nurtures their innovators. This means identifying innovators wherever they might exists and providing them with education, research facilities, and funding opportunities. Countries that invest in these areas are more likely to produce innovators who can compete globally and solve complex problems.  Conversely countries who reward mediocrity or disregard their nation’s talents due to politics, or race, or gender or any other bias, will simply lose them to countries who appreciate and develop talents and this of course engenders inefficiency, mediocrity, and corruption.

Countries also need to create a culture that values and rewards innovation. Innovators  need an ecosystem replete with talent and support and they should be respected and given the resources they need to realize their ideas. This includes access to funding, intellectual property protection, and mentorship.

Some countries fail to appreciate the diversity of their innovators and marginalize them based on biases such as gender, race, sexual orientation, class or other forms of discrimination. This deprives innovators of equal opportunities, resources, and support, which hinders their innovation potential and harms the country as a whole.  It is therefore essential for countries to address these biases and promote diversity and inclusion among their innovators. By doing so, they can unleash the full potential of their innovators and achieve higher levels of progress and development.
