The Ministry of Health has repeatedly stated that mental illness is a major problem in Guyana. The Ministry has emphasised, too, that not enough attention is given to the issue. Experts say that one source of mental stress and illness is prolonged exposure to a toxic person.

If you know someone who is difficult and causes a lot of conflict in your life, you may be dealing with a toxic person. These people can create lots of stress and unpleasantness for you and others, not to mention emotional or even physical pain.

Mental experts say that there are warning signs to watch out for if you think you’re dealing with a toxic person.

  • You feel like you’re being manipulated into something you don’t want to do.
  • You feel like you are being judged.
  • You’re constantly confused by the person’s behavior.
  • You feel like you deserve an apology that never comes.
  • You always have to defend yourself to this person.
  • You never feel fully comfortable around them.
  • You continually feel bad about yourself in their presence.
  • You feel controlled.

If you’ve experienced these feelings around someone, they may be toxic. If you constantly have such emotions, you may want to change the relationship or stop the relationship entirely.

Whatever you decide to do, here are some ways of coping with a toxic person.

Author Danielle Wade gives the following advice about how to cope with such people in an article in the psychology publication Psych Central. For more read
