Guyana’s democracy under siege

Dear Editor,

The racist PPP government destroyed the homes, lives and livelihoods of African Guyanese citizens in Mocha Arcadia. They were brutalised and dragged from their homes on ancestral lands that were bought by former slaves, as if in apartheid South Africa.

7 families; including 14 adults and 20 children were left homeless. The objective of the regime was to strip these Black citizens of their human rights and human dignity. To date these families remain homeless and dehumanised.

Some of their elected representatives provided stellar representation. Nonetheless, these victims are homeless and languishing in uncertainty!

These must be a resolution. Their homes and dignity must be restored. There must be adequate political and legal representation for this to be achieved. There must be justice.

The jurisdiction of the courts must be invoked. It is worrisome that this option was not pursued earlier to stop the carnage.

The PPP government will not voluntarily resolve this situation. They are callous racists with no interest in the welfare of black people. A resolution must be forced.

Moreover, there must also be an international investigation of this atrocity by the Police and the government. Those responsible must be held to account.

The PNCR as well as the APNU and AFC are the political representatives of Mocha Arcadia. They must do more to secure a resolution on behalf of these families as well as ensure justice.

Yours truly,
Rickford Burke
President
Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID)
