Taxi Driver,  woman busted with ganja at Mahaicony

A 39-year-old male taxi driver and a 20-year-old Sophia woman were on Tuesday arrested after two large bags, containing seven packs of compressed Marijuana totalling 15,412 grams, were discovered in a vehicle they were traveling in.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force explained that it was just about 13:30hrs on October 13, 2020 when ranks from Regional Division Five came into contact with the duo at a road block operation on the Mahaicony Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

During the police operation, the motor car driven by the taxi driver was stopped. A search was immediately conducted on the driver, who resides at Durban Street, Lodge and Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, and the ‘A’ Field, Sophia woman.  That search unearthed nothing.

The police then decided to search the vehicle they duo was in.

“Further searches were conducted in the interior where in the trunk of the said vehicle, two large bags containing seven (7) compressed, bulky transparent plastic with leaves, seeds and stem suspected to be cannabis were found,” the police disclosed.

As a result of the discovery, the driver and the occupant were immediately told of the suspected narcotics, and cautioned. It was while being cautioned that the taxi driver admitted ownership.

Both the driver and the woman were arrested and escorted to the Mahaicony Police Station where the suspected narcotics was weighed in their presence.

The suspected narcotics was then lodged.  According to the police, the duo remains in custody pending further investigations.
